The organizers of the International Astronautical Congress have invited Vice President Mike Pence to give the address at the Opening Ceremony.

Letter to the IAC
We write to condemn the inclusion of Vice President Mike Pence at the Opening Ceremony of the 2019 International Astronautical Congress. The decision to lend a platform to Pence, who is anti-LGBTQ+, anti-woman, and anti-immigrant, signals to attendees—many of whom are part of our international community of researchers, entrepreneurs, students—that the IAF and the AIAA privilege bigotry and discrimination over inclusion and intellectual freedom.
While some might claim that Pence is simply performing his perfunctory role as Chair of the National Space Council, the performance of his duties with respect to space exploration is not separable from the performance of his other duties as Vice President: namely, carrying out administration policies that erode or strip members of the space community of their human rights. The field of talented, bright, and path-breaking alternative choices within the space community—any of whom could have been invited to give opening remarks at the 2019 IAC— prompts the signatories of this letter to denounce Vice President Pence’s role in the IAC’s activities in the strongest terms.
Long prior to, and within, his role as Vice President and Chair of the National Space Council, Mike Pence has dedicated his career to undermining the personhood of people who are already underrepresented in the space community. His past and ongoing work to dismantle the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, women, and immigrants , are well documented. Also a matter of record is his work counter to science, and most recently, his role as a surrogate for President Trump in the Syria-Kurds-Turkey debacle—a position that betrays U.S. allies and invited swift rebuke even from that administration’s own party.
Despite his current Chairship of the National Space Council, it is notable that the Vice President’s career does not show any evidence of his dedication to (or even interest in) space. That the organizers of the IAC invite a man who follows the “Billy Graham rule”—in which Pence refuses to be alone with a woman other than his wife—would be laughable if it were not so harmful. Such a move posits that women’s existence and independence presents a hazard to his integrity, which is assumed to be more valuable.
We ask the organizers of the IAC: What message are you sending to the most marginalized members who attend this event—many of whom are connected to communities and institutions that have long struggled to find and maintain diverse representation? When you choose such a model of misogyny, racism, xeno-, trans- , and homophobia to set the tone for this entire event, how do you expect to grow and foster talent in the space sciences?
Welcoming Vice President Pence to open this year’s IAC is at odds with the IAC’s purported mission of global collaboration (“international accomplishments and partnerships that have become the hallmarks of space exploration”). The IAF and AIAA’s choice denigrates the United States’ role as a leader in space sciences, and directly works against the future of space by undermining the inclusion of our increasingly diverse international space community. Combined with the steep costs of attendance, these actions by the IAF and AIAA work only to silo knowledge further by putting the most privileged members of the space community first. Rather than choosing speakers who truly represent the spirit of the IAC, the IAF and AIAA’s actions mean that many members of our community, in attending the IAC opening ceremony, will instead be asked to listen to the hollow words of someone who does not think they are fully human.
DEMANDS:
ACTIONS:
In response to what is at best a callous and unthoughtful move, and at worst, a direct signal that excludes women, LGBTQ+ folks, and immigrants, we urge the attendees of the IAC to participate in the following actions:
RECOGNITION OF LIMITATIONS:
We welcome any level of participation for these actions, and explicitly recognize that, especially, for young people in government, academia, and private companies, the planned actions may directly bear on your professional life and opportunities. If you are unable to participate, please forward this statement and list of actions to those who might visibly and vocally support these moves.

DEMANDS:
- We demand that Mike Pence be publicly disinvited to all IAC-related events, current and future.
- We further demand a response from the organizers to explain their decision to include Pence.
ACTIONS:
In response to what is at best a callous and unthoughtful move, and at worst, a direct signal that excludes women, LGBTQ+ folks, and immigrants, we urge the attendees of the IAC to participate in the following actions:
- Wear red at the Opening Ceremonies, which begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21. Arrive early: Doors open at 7 a.m..
- Wear a rainbow ribbon on your left wrist. We will be raising our hands as soon as Pence begins his remarks during the Opening Ceremonies, and walking out. As LGBTQA+ folks ourselves, or as allies to that community, we have chosen this action as a direct condemnation of Mike Pence’s intolerance of LGBTQA+ people.
- We encourage you to wear the ribbon for the entirety of the IAC events if you feel comfortable.
- We also encourage you to pin the ribbon to your Booth.
- Sign this letter, which will be forwarded to the organizers of the IAC and to media outlets.
- Forward this letter freely to your colleagues, people in power, and potential signatories.
RECOGNITION OF LIMITATIONS:
We welcome any level of participation for these actions, and explicitly recognize that, especially, for young people in government, academia, and private companies, the planned actions may directly bear on your professional life and opportunities.
